Services We Provide
Diagnosis
Neuropsychological assessments provide objective
documentation of an individual's capabilities in a number
of areas, including:
- motor function (strength, dexterity)
- sensory function (for example, vision, sense of touch)
- use of language
- many different types of memory
- many different types of intelligence
- organization and control of behavior
- planning skills
The tests are noninvasive and differ from imaging
techniques such as MRI in that they require people to use
their brains in a variety of tasks to see how the brain is
actually working.
Personality is also assessed, along with an
assessment of stressors on the job, at school, or in the home.
A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment
requires several hours. These assessments are usually accomplished
in a single day. Appointments can be scheduled to accommodate
special needs. Our office staff will be happy to answer any
questions you may have about our procedures.
Treatment
Our office provides diagnostic and consultative
services only. Once a diagnosis has been made and relevant
problems have been identified, a report is prepared for the
referring party, for example, your physician. This report
includes the diagnostic conclusions and recommendations for
any needed treatment or therapy, as well as other appropriate
recommendations concerning work, school, or community activities.
Treatment recommendations frequently include neurorehabilitation,
specifically in the form of cognitive rehabilitation.
The goal of cognitive rehabilitation is to provide
the person with the mental tools necessary to function as
independently and effectively as possible in the real world
despite any damage to the brain. Since the type and extent
of cognitive deficits vary with each person, treatment is
highly individualized. Methods used in cognitive rehabilitation
focus on teaching practical strategies which help overcome
barriers to productive functioning.
Recommended treatment may also involve stress
management, psychotherapy, family therapy and other traditional
methods of psychological treatment.
Consultation is also provided
to employers, to schools, and to other agencies as needed
in order to help our patients achieve their best possible
adjustment and reach their highest potential.
